Career Transition Summary
Calculating your official Last Working Day (LWD) accurately avoids handover conflicts, ensures timely Full and Final (FnF) settlements, and gives your new employer an exact onboarding date.
Calculate Your Exact Last Working Day →Resigning from a job is a major career milestone, but determining your official exit date often causes confusion. Between contractual 30, 60, or 90-day clauses, public holidays, weekend counts, and accumulated earned leaves, employees frequently struggle to pinpoint their legal departure date.
In this guide, we break down standard corporate notice period rules, when the countdown timer officially starts, how to offset accrued leaves for an early release, and how notice buyout deductions are calculated.
When Does the Notice Period Start?
In standard corporate practice, the notice period countdown begins on the calendar day following the date you submit your formal written resignation (e.g. via email or HR portal). For example, if you submit your resignation on Monday, September 1st, your Day 1 of notice begins on Tuesday, September 2nd.
Calendar Days vs Working Days
- Calendar Days Standard (95% of Companies): Notice periods in India and internationally (30, 60, or 90 days) are measured in consecutive calendar days. This means weekends (Saturdays & Sundays) and gazetted public holidays count toward completing your notice obligation.
- Working Days Clause: In rare specialized service contracts, if the agreement explicitly states "60 working days", weekends and company holidays are excluded from the countdown.
How to Offset Earned Leaves (EL/PL) for Early Release
If you have accumulated 15 days of paid/earned leaves, many employers allow you to adjust those leaves against your notice period. This allows you to advance your physical Last Working Day by 15 days while remaining on company rolls until the contractual end date.
How Notice Period Buyout is Calculated
If you or your new employer wish to buy out your notice period (e.g. leaving 30 days early on a 90-day notice), the buyout recovery amount is computed as:
